Cooking Made Easy
Cooking Made Easy is an after-school program at Patrick Henry High that takes place on Mondays and Fridays. Students learn kitchen and knife safety, how to follow a recipe, and gain exposure to new foods, while being taught the skills that are affordable and easy to prepare. The program uses a subtle approach to to dealing with issues of obesity and other food related health issues by showing students they don't always have to rely on fast food and encouraging them to explore new options in the kitchen. Class discussions focus on what food groups the ingredients belong to, the health benefits they provide, and the geographical area and cuisine the food or ingredient are native to. Long term students are encouraged to take ownership of the class by leading demonstrations and supervising other students. |
Art of Words
Art of Words is a Spoken Word and Hip Hop class offered after school at Patrick Henry High School. The class aims to suit the needs of the students who attend, whether it is assistance in the writing process, learning to perform, or just a place to express themselves. Students learn to critically analyze art by reading and listening to songs and poetry and identifying the writing techniques and styles utilized by the artist. The objective is to help the students develop a vocabulary with which to discuss their craft, and ultimately create an artistic community where the students can critique each others work and solicit feedback. In addition to writing, students are encouraged to perform their work. In class performances help them to work on their stage presence, vocal projection, and self confidence. Currently we are working on hosting a monthly open mic, organized by the students, and creating a studio for the students to record. This class is offered weekly. |

EYES: Engaging Youth & Empowering Seniors
The Seniors and Youth Programs collaborate on an intergenerational program that will sensitize youth to the challenges and vitality of their older neighbors through culturally and age appropriate activities to create a community of youth interested in volunteer, work situations, or educational focus on older adults. This will enhance the creation of a caring culture and provides opportunities for young people to assist their older neighbors. |
SMART Moves
The SMART Moves program is a collaboration with the Patrick Henry Beacons/Boys and Girls Club. SMART Moves ( Skills, Mastery And Resistance Training) is one of the few national prevention programs currently addressing the problems of alcohol and other drug use and teen pregnancy in a comprehensive curriculum. Unlike other programs, SMART Moves confronts young people in a positive way, equipping them with basic life skills, problem solving and decision- making abilities and communication skills, all designed to boost self-confidence and self esteem. Students from Patrick Henry currently travel to the Jerry Gamble Boys and Girls Club to talk to elementary and junior high students about these and other issues. In addition they help students with homework and lead other activities. |
